The Love for The Trade Runs in the Family

In celebration of Women in Construction Week, we’d like to recognize our IBEW Local 96 Foreman, Michelle Travis. Michelle began her career journey as a student at Assumption College, but a summer job and family connection sparked her interest in the electrical trade.
“I grew up in a family full of electricians,” Michelle said. Her father is a licensed electrician, and when he saw his daughter’s uncertainty about what she wanted to study in college, he offered her a summer job.
“Two months in, I realized I wanted to become an electrician,” Michelle said. She was accepted into the Local 96 Apprenticeship Program as a third-year apprentice. “Prior to joining Local 96, I got married and had two back-to-back pregnancies while working non-union.”
Michelle earned her license and continues to advance her training skills today. “I love the variety and versatility of my work,” she said. “I love using my physical and mental strength in my daily work.”
Michelle’s advice for others is simple. “Advocate for yourself, get the right tools for your work and you’ll be a successful electrician.”
